One of the most important links in the entire supply chain are sea freighters – container ships that are loaded with standardized shipping containers and carry them to river, lake, and sea ports. At the moment, there are about 5,500 container ships in the world that carry over 17 million shipping containers annually.
How Big Is a Shipping Container?
As in most industries, demand is what shapes how things work. So, in the shipping industry, the requirements of importers and exporters paved the way for standardizing the dimensions of shipping containers.
Today, those ISO standards allow suppliers and merchants to ship goods and commodities in containers in the form of dry packages, liquid materials, bulk grains, raw materials, etc.
There’s an entire range of standardized sizes for shipping containers, but most commonly they appear in two lengths expressed in feet (20 feet and 40 feet). Their height is usually standard as well (8.5 feet and 9.5 feet (high cube)).
However, shipping containers can be as small as 8 feet (2.44 meters) all the way up to 48 feet (14.63 meters) in length.
This guide will help you overview the different types of shipping containers, their usage, and their sizes and dimensions. Here, it’s important to note that shipping container sizes and dimensions can slightly vary from guide to guide due to market or build.

External vs Internal Dimensions
Everyone who deals with shipping containers should make note of the difference between their external and internal dimensions. The bottom, the top, and the doors of a container have a certain thickness and all the walls are corrugated. All of those characteristics contribute for the internal dimensions to be redacted from the external.
Transporters should always learn about the external dimensions of shipping containers so they would better deal with loading and securing containers on their vehicles and properties. On the other hand, merchants and buyers are more interested in the internal dimensions as they want to know how much cargo they could fit inside a certain container.
The main difference between a container’s external and internal dimensions are with its height. The top is corrugated, which takes away 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the height, and the floor has a thickness of 1.1 inches (2.8 cm) and a clearance of about 6 inches (15 cm). That means that, in total, the internal height of a shipping container is about 8 inches (20.3 cm) shorter than the external height.
The walls of a container are both corrugated by 1 inch (2.5 cm), taking 2 inches (5 cm) from the container’s internal width. The back has a 1 inch (2.5 cm) corrugation and the doors have a thickness of 2 inches (5 cm), resulting in a 3 inch (7.5 cm) difference between the external and the internal length of a container.
It’s also important to note that the doors of a container are shorter in height from the container’s total height since, above the door, they all have a steel rail with a usual height of 4 inches (10.2 cm).
Shipping Container Dimensions: Height
Height is an important metric of the shipping container dimensions because it’s the main difference between high cube containers (HC) and general cube containers (GP). The rest of their dimensions (length and width) are the same.
High cube containers are 1 foot taller than general purpose containers. Initially, they were made higher to fit more furniture inside, but later on they presented other benefits as well.
So, a general purpose container’s external height is 8.5 inches (2.59 meters) and the internal height is approximately 7.8 feet (2.39 meters), depending on the build and container type.
The taller, high cube containers are 9.5 inches (2.90 meters) tall externally and their internal height is approximately 8.8 inches (2.69 meters).
Besides their height, high cube containers can be recognized by the black/yellow tape located near their corner castings.
Given that, no matter if the container is 10 feet, 20 feet, or 40 feet long, its height is always the same.
Shipping Container Dimensions: Weight
Shipping containers of different sizes and dimensions, naturally, weigh differently. Various types of weight are displayed on the outside of a shipping container, and they usually include:
- Tare weight – This is how much an empty shipping container weighs. For example, 20 feet shipping containers weigh about 4,500 lbs (2,000 kg) empty and 40 feet shipping containers weigh about 8,200 lbs (3,200 kg) empty;
- Payload – All shipping containers have a weight limit on how much cargo they can hold. For instance, 20 feet shipping containers have a cargo weight limit of about 62,600 lbs (28,400 kg) and 40 feet shipping containers have a cargo weights limit of about 58,900 lbs (26,700 kg);
- Maximum Gross Weight (MGW) – International standards imply that a shipping container mustn’t exceed a certain weight limit for safety reasons. For standard shipping containers that limit is 67,200 lbs (30,480 kg). In other words, the maximum gross weight of a container is the tare and payload weights combined.
Shipping Containers vs Storage Containers
Containers used for shipping and containers used for storage have different requirements. Let’s dive into these now.
Containers for Shipping
Shipping containers need to satisfy many conditions so they can be deemed fit for carrying cargo. They are used for transporting expensive items and materials and any defects or unsatisfying conditions can disqualify them to perform such services.
One regulation that shipping containers need to abide by is to carry a CSC plate that’s in order. The CSC (convention for safe containers) plate contains the container’s weight, its owner’s address, and the last time that the container was fumigated. Possessing a CSC plate proves that the container is fit for use. Without one, ships cannot load them on board.
Containers for Storage
When it comes to storage containers, regulations are less strict. They do need to be in decent condition and able to protect goods, however, they can be constructed from lighter materials and aren’t limited to preset sizes and dimensions.
Usually, storage containers are old and refurbished shipping containers. They are ensured to be water and wind-tight and also without any major dents, holes, or misshapen following. We recommend to everyone looking for storage containers to ensure they have proper locking bars and are in a supervised location.
Standard Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Let’s begin with breaking down the sizes and dimensions of standard shipping containers. They are the most common type of container and since they are used for shipping dry cargo they are also referred to as dry containers.
Standardization means that shipping containers need to comply with requirements everywhere. A 20 feet shipping container needs to fit on a ship made in the US or China, regardless of the maker. This is necessary for the entire logistics chain to work flawlessly.
Also, it’s much easier for merchants to operate across different industries while knowing that they are dealing with the same type of container for shipping goods and materials.
Dry Shipping Container
Dry containers are made out of aluminum and steel. Assuming a dry container is a good cognition, they are water and air-tight and able to safely store and transport dry cargo such as boxes, barrels, grain sacks, wooden pallets, electronics, furniture, clothing, etc.
Below, we’ll list all of the standard shipping container types.

Smaller (New Build) Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
8ft Shipping Container
The 8ft shipping container is the smallest version of a shipping container. Therefore, it’s less common than the standard 20 and 40ft shipping containers.
8ft shipping containers are popular with smaller vessels and sites that are limited in storage space. Small businesses, sports clubs, and courtyard homes are some of the most common parties that utilize the 8ft shipping container.
While small, 8ft shipping containers are no less secure, strong, and weatherproof. They are equally capable of protecting the goods they carry as their bigger counterparts. Their advantage is their compact size and simple design, making them one of the most suitable solutions for transporting goods.
However, this small type of shipping container is not used on container ships as often as 20 or 40ft shipping containers. The 8ft container is mostly used by trucks and for storing goods such as working equipment, furniture, auto and machine parts, office documents, etc.

10ft Shipping Container
More common than the 8ft container but less common than the 20ft one is the 10ft shipping container. Since they’re the most popular choice of the smaller container types, they’re usually called the mini shipping container.
Similarly to the 8ft shipping container, the 10ft container is mostly used to transport goods by road and for onsite storage. They can safely store furniture, paper, working equipment, all kinds of accessories, and much more.

Ventilated Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Ventilated shipping containers are those that have lateral openings to allow air to flow and circulate within the container. They are usually made in the 20ft standard container sizes and dimensions with minor deviations.
This type of container is most suitable for transporting cargo that vaporizes and causes condensation if packed in tightly closed spaces. The side openings allow fresh air to come from the outside and the stale, hot air to exit.
That way, cargo that requires conditions of constant temperature and humidity can be safely transported with risks of damage reduced to the minimum.
Ventilated shipping containers are suitable for transporting and storing fruits, vegetables, grains, and coffee beans. The most common cargo for this container is coffee, which gives its nickname – the coffee container.

Refrigerated Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Refrigerated shipping containers (also referred to as reefer shipping containers) are a special type of transport and storage container capable of preserving its internal temperature. They are equipped with a system that can keep the internal temperature range from -13ºF (-25ºC) up to 77ºF (25ºC).
These containers can be easily recognized by their refrigeration system located at the back of the container. This system needs to be powered up electrically, therefore, it needs to be connected to the power source of the port where it’s located or the ship/vehicle that transports it. The entire transport chain needs to be properly equipped to power up reefer containers from pick up to drop off.
It’s also important to note that there are other types of reefer containers that can maintain freezing temperatures that can go as low as -76ºF (-60ºC).
The usual type of cargo that reefer containers transport is frozen foods such as fish, meat, fruits, and other easily perishable goods. They are also capable of transporting and storing pharmaceuticals and medicines.

Insulated Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Certain types of goods cannot be transported by standard shipping containers since their walls are made of thin metal that allows for the external temperature to enter the interior. That way, goods such as chemicals, food, medicine, and other perishable items can sustain damage and spoil or rot.
When the need for a shipping container suitable for maintaining a stable internal environment was apparent, the insulated shipping container came to life.
Insulated shipping containers are also known as non-operational reefer shipping containers made using special techniques to safely store and transport easily perishable items such as medicines, vaccines, chemicals, organs, biological materials, pharmaceuticals, and more.
Insulated shipping containers have double walls with vacuumed space in between that prevents temperature fluctuations. Its opening is specially designed to be able to fully seal the contents and doesn’t allow for any moisture to enter from the outside, thus preserving the same humidity within the inside.

Flat Rack Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Some types of cargo, such as furniture, heavy machinery, or construction equipment, are usually higher and heavier than what a standard shipping container can fit. This is why such items are transported by flat rack shipping containers.
Flat rack shipping containers have foldable sides and no roof thus allowing higher and wider cargo to be loaded on them. Their standard dimensions duplicate those of standard 20ft and 40ft shipping containers.
Having no sides and a top, flat rack shipping containers allow for easy side or top loading of the cargo. Heavy machinery, building supplies, or construction materials can be loaded from the top using cranes, and high furniture pieces or irregularly-shaped items can be loaded from the sides by forklifts.
In any case, extra precautions such as leashing of the cargo is advisable to help secure it. Covers can also be used for protection against severe weather conditions such as strong winds or heavy rain or snow.
Cargo that is meant to be transported by flat rack shipping containers should have marked lifting points and handling instructions readily available so the risk of any potential damages is avoided.

Open Top Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Similar to flat rack shipping containers, open top containers are standard shipping containers that have the option to load goods from the top. Unlike the former, the latter does have side metal walls.
So, the fact that open top containers have no roof makes them suitable for loading heavy cargo that can be lifted by a crane. Other items that can’t fit into a high cube container because of their excessive height can also be transported by open top shipping containers.
The walls of the open top container can protect the cargo so there’s no need for leashing. For protection above there are specific covers such as tarpaulins that are suitable for covering the goods. It should also be noted that the open top is slightly smaller in dimensions than the external top dimensions of the container. This is important when figuring out the means of loading the goods from the top.
The usual maximum load of a 20ft open top shipping container is 61,730 lbs (28,000 kg) and the 40ft open top shipping container has a maximum load of up to 66,140 lbs (30,000 kg).
Cargo that is meant to be transported by open top shipping containers should have marked lifting points and handling instructions readily available so the risk of any potential damages is avoided.
It’s important to note that open top shipping containers usually cost more than standard shipping containers since they are low in demand. Carriers might charge extra for booking this type of container since they often need to return them to their origin cargo-free.

Pallet Wide Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Pallet-wide containers can only be used domestically for transporting goods by trains and trucks. They are a bit wider than standard shipping containers so they are able to easily fit two standard wooden pallets.
There are multiple types of pallet-wide containers. They range from the smallest that are able to carry 20 wooden pallets to the biggest with capacity of 48 wooden pallets. Some of them can also be equipped with intermodal features that allow them to safely restrain the cargo, such as reinforced floors, lashing rings, freight-track restraint system, handling points, etc.
By using a vertical load bar, pallets can be stacked 2 high and 2 wide onto pallet-wide shipping containers. The usual type of cargo that’s transpired by this type of container is heavy dense cargo that needs to be securely fastened while in transit.

Side Door Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Imagine the standard shipping container but with additional opening space. With that purpose in mind, the shipping industry was introduced to the side door shipping container.
Side door shipping containers, as the name suggests, have side doors instead of front doors. That way they provide the ultimate flexibility and are ideal for easier loading and unloading of goods on various freight types.
This type of shipping container features steel side doors allowing the time for labor operation to be reduced to the minimum by using HSE-compliant machinery and processes.
The side door shipping container is all-metal, providing maximum protection and reducing equipment downtime and additional damage costs. Its tare weight is also quite low, allowing for increased payload.
Side door shipping containers can be double stacked during transport by rail which additionally increases cost efficiency.
Cargo of all general purposes can be shipped using side door containers, including pallet wide dense cargo, heavy machinery, steel coils, etc.

Half Height Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
A half-height container also comes as an open-top container for easy loading and unloading of cargo. You also have the option to customize it with removable side or swinging doors.
The half height shipping container is a quite different type of container from all of our previous entries. Its prime distinction is its reduced height and its purpose is to transport goods that are heavy but in low volume.
All half height shipping containers in circulation must be DNV- approved. According to the Det Norske Veritas standard, these containers need to be equipped with internal lashing rings, shackles, and slings. They also need to possess forklift points, cargo restraining nets, net securing points, and anti-slip surfaces for safety reasons.
Some half height shipping containers can also have an open top for simpler loading and unloading. Others can come with an option of having side doors.
Half height shipping containers are ideal for shipping cargo that has a lower height. That can include metal chains, pipes, tools, anchors, hooks, gravel, sand, coal, etc.

ISO Tank Shipping Container Sizes and Dimensions
Liquids and gasses cannot be stored or transported in a regular shipping container. Therefore, ISO shipping containers (ISO tanks) are introduced to handle the transport of cargo such as milk, wine, oil, natural gas, chemicals, toxic waste, and other hazardous substances.
ISO tanks are propped on a metal structure that resembles that of a standard shipping container. Therefore, they can be easily mounted and transported by conventional shipping vessels and vehicles.
The inside of ISO tanks is lined with an insulation material so the outer layers of the tank are protected from the contents of the cargo. Additionally, insulating the tank helps protect the cargo from temperature fluctuations.
ISO tanks come in a variety of sizes – from 10ft to 40ft in length. They are a very convenient option for transporting bulk cargo throughout the entire shipping chain since they’re environmentally friendly, safe, and a lot more flexible than over-the-road tank vehicles.
It’s important to note that once an ISO tank has been used to transport any hazardous substances, they are properly flagged and cannot be used to ship other liquids such as food. The opposite is also enforced.
